Be Yourself
Dos asked Dollcee, what do you think will be the next big thing in popular culture?
Dollcee sat in silence for some time before answering, I wouldn’t have a clue, she responded.
Dos said, is that because you do not like to make predictions or you can not see much potential in the culture beyond the door.
Dollcee shot back, both of the above. Look Dos, it is a total waste of time and energy believing in the possibility of ‘the BIG next THING’, it is simply dumb. Changes come about through structural changes in the culture, either technology or general disruptions. Young people can make a lot of noise and be associated with some change, but I doubt if they would cause it.
Dollcee said, okay Dos, I will speculate on what might become popular amongst youth. Not very much, the technology and poor distribution of wealth create a bland culture that celebrates individuals briefly emerging from the pack. Generally, this means that aspirations are dull and citizens quickly get bored with celebrities, no matter how big their bottoms are or how many tattoos they have.
So Dos, when there is a major upheaval, one generation after this event will be associated with a cultural change, which is probably no more than a settling down after some disruption.
Dollcee felt she had finally stopped Dos’s questions, when she thought, I wonder where all that stuff I said, came from.
Then Dollcee started again, if you are serious about capturing youth culture Dos, you will have to go to a developing country where the young population seriously out numbers the older populations. They will probably be too poor to be worried about much else than getting on with it in order to survive.
Dollcee went even further, Dos, quality will always out last quantity, strive to do the best work you can and try to enjoy the process at every level of your development. Most of all, try to be honest with yourself.
